Revolutions per Minute

Ever wondered how fast your car engine works to get you on the move? RPM or revolutions per minute measure the complete 360-degree rotations that the crankshaft of the car engine’s internalcombustion completes in a minute. The faster your crankshaft rotates, the closer you get to yourengine’s maximum torque and horsepower output.

Why Knowing Your Engine’s RPM is Important

Your car engine’s rpm serves more than indicate how hard your engine is working. Below are some important information you get just by monitoring the rpm in your odometer.

 ·         RPM Alerts You on Your Mileage

A general rule of thumb for rpm is that the lower that number is, the better fuel mileage you will get. This means that fuel economy depends on your rpm. Driving your car at the lowest rpm increases your car’s gas mileage, allowing you to save more on fuel.

 ·         RPM Tells You When It’s Time to Shift Gears

When your engine starts to work too hard, the gears of the car change to match the engine’s work. The rpm alerts you when the engine is already working too hard so you can shift gears. As a rule, the lower your rpm is, the higher the gear.

 ·         RPM Helps in Car Maintenance

Keeping a low rpm when driving extends your car’s life expectancy, making it last longer at top shape.

 Standard Automobile RPM

Car engines have a standard measure of revolution per minute. Minimum engine rpm speed is usually around 1,000 rpm or 16 Hz. Lower than that and your engine stalls because the internal combustion system does not combust / explode in order to move the engine’s piston. Most drivers operate at around 2,500 to 3,000 rpm or 41 Hz. Upper limits are at 6,000 to 10,000 rpm (100 to 166 Hz); driving at such speed would reflect a red line in your car’s tachometer. Too high rpm wastes fuel and energy because the cylinders are moving faster than the combustion can push it. Overworking your engine this way can cause long term damage to the internal combustion of your car, not to mention increase your possibility of meeting a car accident.

 RPM and Safe Driving

For your own safety, always make sure that you are driving within the speed limit. Keep an eye on your odometer to make sure you are not straining your car’s engine. Shift gears when necessary to avoid damaging your car engine. It also pays to have your car checked up regularly to make sure that it’s always on top shape. Remember that rpm is not simply a measure of your car’s engine speed; it’s also a signal for you to mind how you drive. Drive safe!
