The mysteries of nature have never ceased to puzzle man. Since time immemorial he is out to unravel the mysteries and draw a logical conclusion to them. It is his inquisitiveness which made him stumble upon many facts and paved way for many inventions. All the knowledge thus gathered over generations is called science and the field is ever growing with more and more discoveries and inventions.
Science is taught as one of the subjects in school. But after ten years of schooling, Science can be taken up as a single subject for study. The stream is one of the diversifications in education from Class X1, the other two being Commerce and Arts. Science is the most sought after stream among the good scorers in Class X. Until not a long ago, Science was considered superior stream of study.
The Science stream opens up the doors to the popular prestigious professions like medicine and engineering. Those who do not succeed in getting a seat for these are still left with many choices like physiotherapy, pharmacy, occupational therapy, veterinary science, agricultural science etc. Many universities offer undergraduate courses with attractive combinations keeping in mind the present-day job market than the conventional combinations. Another advantage of a science student at +2 level is that he can opt for commerce and arts in undergraduate level which, however, is not possible the other way round.
The mandatory subjects in junior college are Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with elective subjects like Biology, Computer Science, Electronics, Statistics etc. If a student chooses the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology combination, he can still keep open the option of going for both medicine and engineering. Any combination without Biology does not enable the student to pursue health science courses.
Getting into a professional course of one’s choice is not a cake walk. In addition to good grades in Class 12 exam, various state boards and institutions at national-level screen the students for admission to professional courses. Some consider the marks of both the qualifying exam and the entrance test, yet some consider only the scores in the entrance test. Some of the tests are as follows.
MHT CET
The government of Maharashtra through a single competent authority conducts the Common Entrance Test MHT CET for admissions to Health Sciences, Engineering and Pharmacy degree courses. Though a single authority conducts the exams, selection is done through respective authorities. Selection for Health Science degree course is done through the Director, Medical Education and Research (DMER), Mumbai , for Engineering and Pharmacy degree courses by the Director, Technical Education (DTE), Mumbai and the selection for BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) is carried out by the Registrar, Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Science University, Nagpur. The Health Sciences courses include MBBS, BAMS, BDS, B Sc. Nursing, BHMS, BUMS, BPTh, BOTh, BASLP and BP&O.
The CET based on the HSC syllabus of Maharashtra has two papers with objective type questions. The 1st paper has Physics and Chemistry with 50 marks each and the 2nd paper is biology (Botany and Zoology with 50 marks each) for health science courses and BVSc & AH aspirants and Mathematics for engineering aspirants. The question papers are in English, Marathi or Urdu.
