Tools for the Dyslexic: Learning to Navigate Through a Non-Dyslexic World When You View the World Completely Different
A. P. Personally, I believe teachers will sometimes overlook dyslexia because it takes more energy out of their class schedules to help a student learn. This article will focus on tools a dyslexic can use when writing e-mails, papers or speaking with your boss, and taking multiple choice exams for job placement, certifications, or any other standardized test and following instructions in order to flip the negative aspects around into a positive way. As a biology major in college writing out DNA sequences, I regularly flipped the amino acids for others not only getting it completely incorrect, but it made my professors wonder how I could possibly continue with a degree in biology. Even though I understood biological and chemical principles, the way I thought about math problems so differently that it made it hard for me to communicate my thoughts about a given topic with my chemistry or biology professors. I switched majors to a subject that allowed me to think in the way that I did. Yes, dyslexia has its share of problems, but it can also have an interesting way of giving an individual a different perspective on how to look at a given problem.
Public Speaking
Since dyslexics flip pronouns around and will say an inversion of what they mean to say, the simple task of thinking through a sentence or phrase will help to eliminate this embarrassing mistake. You should make it imperative in your mind so you can help yourself overcome the "verbal dyslexia". This could be the difference between a promotion, or your continued work at a dead end job.
Verb Agreements
Another way to combat this is by correcting yourself after you have realized you made a verb agreement mistake. Do not be afraid to correct yourself if correcting yourself means you are conveying yourself in a correct fashion.
Writing
While speaking is difficult for dyslexics because we run the risk of verbally switching verbs or pronouns, writing is easier because we can catch any mistakes we have made. For dyslexics, writing is probably one of the best ways to communicate because one can go back and correct whatever they have written. Make sure you check everything you write carefully.
Taking Standardized Tests
There are two ways to combat this: first, take a scrap piece of paper and cover up the answer sheet until all you can see is the line that holds the answers to your question, (i.e. The first question you must ask yourself when getting ready to take a multiple choice exam is simple. For some dyslexics, individuals will fill in an inappropriate circle because they have filled in the incorrect circle thinking they have filled in the correct circle. " Once you have answered your own question, underline the key phrases in the sentence. This can be attributed to (find the answer that BEST answers this question)
A. Most adult dyslexics find it amazingly difficult to take a standardized test. By looking at other exams, this will help you understand the format of the standardized test. This can be attributed to (find the answer that BEST answers this question)
B. Look at past exams and look at how you answered the questions. As a student, I found that standardized tests could be fatal to my academic career.
Instructions
Also, looking at a map before you venture out will also prove to be useful and even more helpful is a GPS unit to read directions to you as you drive. The bottom line for combating dyslexia simply is getting into the hang of rereading, proofreading, double and triple checking everything you say or do. In addition, simple tasks of left and right can be exceedingly difficult for me when I am driving to a location different then how the directions have me approaching the location. My struggles with dyslexia have seemed overwhelming, especially during the times in my life where I didn't know what I was experiencing was called. If you find that this is a characteristic of your dyslexia, e-mail exchanges will prove to be the best ways for you to communicate with others. You will constantly need to adjust your life to living with dyslexia, and will constantly need to analyze your life to figure out where you are having dyslexic moments. Studying similar tests will help you get in the mindset of taking the given exam and understanding how the questions will be asked will only help you to succeed.
