London, England is home to more than 40,000 internationally recognized universities that attract many students each year. Students gain a global network of friends and reside in a diverse city while earning a world-class education. Although most London universities require overseas students to pay full tuition, there are resources to help fund academic expenses. Colleges in London have experience in helping overseas students transition both socially and academically in order to fully take advantage of what the city has to offer.

Students must consider several factors when selecting which colleges in London to apply to. The location of the college is a very important factor. For example, a university on the outskirts of London can provide students with a more peaceful, rural landscape along with the convenience of accessing the city by train. Students who prefer a more bustling city life might attend a college in the center of London. Prospective students should review each college's course flexibility, as well. Some academic programs cover a range of subjects in the initial years and become more specialized later on. Other colleges require first-year compulsory courses and then allow students to select a subject to study in depth. In addition to learning more about a school's curriculum, students must be aware of each college's entry standards, research opportunities and academic rigor. Having knowledge of these factors regarding education will enable prospective students to apply to colleges with the right fit.

Once overseas applicants apply and gain acceptance to colleges in London, they must obtain a student visa prior to entering the United Kingdom to study. The applicant must illustrate that he has been accepted to a recognized college in London in order for the process to be successful. In order to do so, admitted students must fill out a VAF9 Migrant form and a PBS Appendix 8 General Student form. Students must also provide the following supporting documents: college acceptance letter, paid bill of tuition fees , Confirmation of Acceptance for Study (CAS) sheet and a £100 check or money order. The applicant then submits the package tot heir local British Embassy and await confirmation.

Figuring out how to pay for college expenses is of prime importance once a student visa is obtained. Traveling to and from London, for example, requires money and careful planning. Travel agencies such as STA travel offer students low-cost Eurail passes and up to 30 percent off on student flights. Students enrolled full-time in a college in London are also eligible for Student Oyster Card in which they save 30 percent on bus and tram passes. More importantly, most colleges in London have established international student support offices to aid such students in finding part-time work, setting up bank accounts and finding affordable housing.
