Working with Spin Doctors in India

The $6 Billion Indian PR industry has been growing at a steady clip of 32% but  is expected to nearly double its size to $10.56 billion by 2012 according to a survey by ASSOCHAM.

This dramatic growth is driven by :

·         a galloping economy,

·         the entry of multinational brands in the country,

·         a rising number of media publications including foreign  publications that make it easier to have international coverage from the country

·         a growing realization in the industry of the strategic role of PR, along with a saturation in advertising

There are nearly 2000 PR agencies in the country that employ 40,000 persons, according to the survey. This has led to high attrition levels of 40% as employees seek to obtain well rounded exposure in diverse areas, with different companies.

Evidently, there is considerable shortage of professionals with the right skills and an understanding of the industry and media. A savvy PR professional must have a wide range of skills including :

·         Written and Oral Communication skills

·         Interpersonal Relationship skills

·         Leadership Skills

·         Humility

·         Creativity

·         Organizing ability

·         Ability to handle frustrations and stay cool under pressure

·         Problem Solving and Decision Making

·         Knowledge about the industry

·         Understanding of media

·         Initiative

·         Curiosity and Learning

·         Energy, Drive and Ambition

Despite this booming growth, the industry is still in  a nascent stage in the country as compared to the developed countries of the world. The PR sector in India is yet to see the intense levels of segmentation in market and media, and the use of communication tools and practices that are common in other competitive markets of the world

Some of the areas where the demand for PR professionals is expected to  agglomerate in the near future are, healthcare, environment, CSR, social media, IT and Financial Services, in addition to traditional sectors.

With a systematic career planning and willingness to learn, an aspiring professional has  a tremendous scope for a lucrative long term career as a Public Relations professional or ‘Spin Doctor’  in the country.
