Transioning in the classroom is a means of getting children from one activity to the next as smoothly and calmly as possible. In this article I will be inlightening apon several ideas for a smooth and safe transition in the classroom and from the play yard.
One way is by picking a particular song the children are familiar with and sing it until the arrival at the new destination or activity site. Make a prop that will go with the theme you are working on to signal when it is time to stop what we are doing, clean up and get together to transition to the next activity. Keep a planning board in the classroom with the childrens names stuck to it with velcro. Then the children can feel important as they move their names from one center or area to another. Practice the trasitional rules daily to keep them fresh in the childrens minds. Clap your hands or use a bell to announce that transition time is here and it's time to clean up and get ready. Have a certain place the children can meet at in the classroom or on the payground when they are done cleaning up and ready to start a transition. This is highly used for safety when transitioning as you should ALWAYS take roll before and after transitioning from one place to another. Use a clapping game that the children and teacher can repeat until arriving at the new destination.
I hope this article has given you some great ideas that can be incorporated in your classrooms. Always remember safety comes first with transitioning from an activity or a playground. Make sure you know where your children are at all times. Take a count before and after transition. Enjoy your children and have fun with your transitional activities!
