Everyone remembers what their parents read to them while they were little kids, or what they read themselves later. Rhymed verses from books seem to stick in your mind forever, perhaps so you can tell them later on to your own children. The all-time favourite book collections include works by Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl, The ‘Read at Home Biff, Chip and Kipper’ collection, ‘Winnie the Pooh’ collection and Mr. Men collection.

Enid Blyton was voted Britain’s best-loved author, while Roald Dahl came second in the same survey. With seven hundred written stories and eight million books popular worldwide, Blyton remains a favourite with kids and adults alike. Grown-ups still remember her stories as being magical, thrilling and very imaginative, while kids cannot wait to read and devour as many of her books as they can. Even if today’s authors such as J.K. Rowling seem to usurp Blyton’s olde worlde charm with tales of wizardry, the latter’s simple and readable style still keep her in the top with collections such as The Famous Five series.

With several of his books turned into Hollywood movies, Dahl’s stories become popular for kids today partly because of the film adaptations. Because his works are written from a child’s point of view, this makes them easily understandable even for little ones. His stories are popular with kids because he enriches the fictional characters with super-powers, like in ‘The Gremlins’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ or ‘Matilda’.

A Book collection with which children can relate is the Biff, Chip and Kipper stories that present familiar settings. The stories presented by the collection seem timeless, because of the values they teach to children. The ‘Winnie the Pooh’ book collection became well known due to the writer A.A. Milne who tells the story of a little yellow bear and his friends, cherishing true friendship. First published in 1924, is best known nowadays due to the Disney adaptations.

The Mr. Men book collection celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. Mr. Tickle, Mr. Greedy, Mr. Bump, Mr. Messy, Mr. Funny, Mr. Happy, Little Miss Naughty and Little Miss Sunshine helped the author, Roger Hargreaves to become the third best-selling writer in the UK. By presenting true human characteristics that are found in all of us, his stories teach kids about moral values and the proper way to treat your friends.
