Transceivers can definitely add up. A great way to spend less in your overall hardware budget is to purchase 3rd party transceivers. A lot of people are worried about going this route. What if the transceiver doesn't work with my Cisco or Juniper products? What if it only works for a couple of months? What if it comes from an untrustworthy source (like ebay)?

A company like fiberstore.com which offers 3rd party transceivers will:

assure that the OEM transceiver you buy through them will have the correct Cisco- compatible (or Juniper-compatible, or Brocade-compatible, you get the idea?-) code and will certainly work with even the most complicated networking equipment cover the transceiver under 3 year warranty (most companies won't even cover this long) do the legwork and make sure the source they receive the transceiver from is reliable.

Additionally, you'll save quite a lot of money compared to purchasing the original.

If lead time has been an issue before, third party transceivers become more available on the 2nd market and can reduce lead time on hard to find, extremely niche components.

Last, and most important, your transceiver will be new! You'd still pay more for a used Juniper or Cisco transceiver and still not be protected by 3 year warranty. It may also not be standard. So maybe it's time to change your opinions about transceivers and go OEM. Really, isn't saving cash and getting greater protection a good thing?
