TFTP is a specialized protocol that network engineers use for file transfers. It’s a very simple protocol that allows for uploading and downloading. With TFTP, which is built on top of the UDP protocol, you are unable to do the things that traditional File Transfer Protocol (FTP) can do, such as list directories. For this reason, it can be used to send and receive files from network devices that have firmware which may be simplistic in design. Are you using TFTP to do iOS and firmware pushes to devices? Maybe you are using it to do configuration tasks for network management. Whatever the case may be, using a free TFTP tool can be useful for configuration management. You are able to run the TFTP tool as a service, limit transfer access to a set of IP addresses and use multi-threading to upload as well as download files simultaneously. This way, the tool actually performs more like a server than just a TFTP tool. Often times, network engineers find that having a plethora of tools running on their workstations becomes cumbersome and confusing. That’s why, if you’re already using a TFTP tool, you may want to consider using something that is able to integrate a good portion of your tools together into something known as the Engineer’s Toolset, which is highly customizable and allows you to have a control panel that is capable of reporting back important information about your system. Free tools are great, but once you’ve unlocked their potential, you need to have more visibility and better customization options. Fortunately, there are options out there, offering a complete set of network management software packages that can help you to keep on top of networking problems that always come up in a complex system. With that being said, good luck with finding the right solution that fits your organization. Again there are a lot of choices out there, but having these options increases the likelihood that one of them will fit right in with your goals.
