Programs and software were typically installed on an office computer. There were disadvantages, the program could become 'out of date', the hard drive could become corrupted or fail with loss of data, and backups had to be made regularly. Larger companies had IT departments, software and data was stored on servers. When employees were not in the office, accessing the programs and data was not straightforward. People on the move tried to take their data and files with them using various methods, e.g re-writeable CD’s and DVD’s. There was also ‘the virtual briefcase’ and then the memory stick; these could be lost, sometimes with confidential data on them. The laptop appeared to be a solution, however they could be misplaced or stolen (complete with sensitive information). The best solution is to use SaaS cloud recruitment software which can be used on an office computer or simply with a front end device like a tablet, android or smart phone; these can be used in or out of the office. Defining SaaS Software SaaS is Software as a Service has evolved from Active Server Pages (ASP’s) and effectively ‘runs on a browser’. ASP’s could access a database on the server, allowing the user to input and retrieve information from any browser at any location. Cloud Computing There are various definitions as cloud computing has evolved, if software is located on a cloud, then companies no longer need to run their own servers. Using cloud software has been compared to a company obtaining its electricity from ‘the national grid’ instead of having its own electricity generator. With cloud based Software as a Service there is no need for an IT department or company servers, the software 'on a cloud' can be accessed not only in the office but anywhere, using inexpensive devices. Software on a cloud can be compared to a computer hard drive being 'somewhere on the internet', accessed from a browser. SaaS Cloud Recruitment Software This is particularly well suited to recruitment and HR. The user in effect 'pays as they go', and does not have to pay 'up front' for a program that is stuck on a hard drive. The user only pays when they use it, and it is completely scalable; as the company grows, it grows with them; user licenses are more cost effective. SaaS recruitment software is ideal for a recruitment executive who uses the software at any location and on the move, with any mobile internet device (or even at home on their Google TV). Added features such as SMS, CV parsing and bulk mail outs from anywhere are also included. Conclusion Software as a Service and Tablet sales are predicted to grow rapidly in 2012. SaaS can be used easily with tablets, smart phones, android browsers, iPhones and similar, unlike 'traditional software' that can only used on computers. It is particularly suitable for recruitment and HR departments and SaaS recruitment software can target candidates and parse CVs. It is able to grow with the company; because it is on demand (pay as you go), costs are less than conventional software.
