When you work in the public sector or on big projects, you quickly learn just how important stakeholder management really is. However, most businesses do not fully understand what a stakeholder is; let alone how to manage them. This is bad for these businesses because it means they manage many of the projects they embark upon in completely the wrong way.
The official and original definition of a stakeholder was "those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist". Nowadays, it is seen to include anyone whose co-operation and participation is needed to make something move forward, be successful or exist.
Getting a Handle on Stakeholder Management
When you set out to do something, you need each party involved in the project to know what their role is and to fulfil that role. Defining their role is one thing and is relatively simple. However, making sure that they deliver what they should when they should throughout the project is something else altogether. You need to take a very, organised approach to check everything is being done on time and to make everyone aware of where you are in the roll out of the project.
Fortunately, there is now some brilliant software available that lets you draw up a list of potential stakeholders. It also lets you stay organised with those you are currently working with. This software also allows you to send information to all of your stakeholders via e-mail and news feeds. You can schedule and manage events involving your stakeholders from the calendar as well.
Finding Stakeholder Management Systems
There are still relatively few stakeholder management systems out there, but they do exist. The best way to find them is with an on-line search. Take your time to watch the video demonstrations and to read all of the information about what the software does. Look for software that allows you to upload information about your existing stakeholders direct into the software. That way you can avoid the nightmare of having to key in the details of hundreds of stakeholders this task could take days. Plus, when you are keying in that level of data you are bound to make mistakes.
