The facilities for sports grounds have improved over the years and in particular the types of outdoor surfaces. Many football teams, both semi-professional and professional have training pitches, and these need to be supported by alternatives as these pitches can become unusable in bad weather conditions.
Football pitches.
The demand for football to be played in all conditions has meant that players need to be able to train at all times and, whilst indoor facilities have always been available, the need for what is euphemistically called ‘plastic turf’ has grown. This is an all weather surface that resembles grass and can be trained on in all weathers. It is not suitable for say rugby, but its use can be extended to hockey, and indeed full games can be played on this surface.
Cricket
Whilst cricket is only played at almost all levels on grass, there is a need for nets and practice grounds to always be available, and with the season starting earlier, the nets are not necessarily of grass. There are various compounds that can be used to simulate grass and allow both batsmen and bowlers to practice for the forthcoming season.
Indoor courts
Indoor courts are available for a number of sports including squash, basketball and tennis to name but a view. These sports demand high quality flooring which needs to be professionally laid. Some tennis tournaments are held in large exhibition halls where the normal flooring is unsuitable, so a ‘floating floor’ is laid. This will be not only polished to a certain level of finish, but will also have a specific tension as the bounce of the ball needs not only to be of a certain height, but the floor must be able to move with the motion of the players.
Squash courts need to have specially prepared flooring as the bounce of the ball as it is returned from the walls must be predictable. The grip that is given to the players is also important, so the flooring must be durable and able to withstand hard usage.
The variety of flooring now called for is growing and thus specialists are developing fresh applications.
