Director of OPM John Berry has always used his position to fulfill the needs of US government personnel. All through his professional life he has tried to make sure that the interests of homosexuals are not ignored. For instance, to repeal the defense of marriage act, he is making use of his position as the director of OPM. He also has worked to give domestic partners of homosexual employees the same advantages available to spouses, and has created a complaints division for people who have experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Because Berry has never tried to hide his sexual orientation, today he is the only openly gay individual to hold such a high government position. Berry has not only shown support to government preference for veterans in its recruitment process, but also pledged to provide them better training. The changes and policies implemented by him have given rise to a lot of teleworking possibilities. This provides several benefits like decreased costs for both government and workers and smooth work flow even during difficult times.

Responding to any negative comments about federal workforce is also one of his responsibilities besides ensuring proper recruitment and the development of benefit policies for the government's 1.9 million employees. In defending comments about federal workers being paid too much, Opm John Berry emphasized that federal workers are largely extremely skilled white collar workers, and that their pay rates reflect this fact. He further says that in order to retain such highly specialized employees and remain competitive, the use of certain private sector recruitment tools is essential.

He is also working to help change the way Americans view the federal workforce. The ultimate objective of these efforts is to make federal positions desirable among young employees and students. Berry has ensured that all federal departments and agencies create informative and clear descriptions about different job profiles. In doing so students and other prospective new hires will have a better idea of what they will actually be expected to do while on the job. Berry's initiatives also involve giving a boost to the Presidential Management Fellows Program. This program helps students work and train to become leaders and managers in the federal workforce.
