Encouraging federal diversity has been the goal of the government for quite a while now. The objective was to recognize the differences within cultures and groups and promote their contributions to the workforce. The reason for the adoption of this program was that these groups that work with the federal government would be encouraged even further to participate. Federal government wanted to make sure that the communities reflected its resident values, providing a clear understanding of the community?s needs and long term objectives. Group categories encompass skill sets, economic status, age, gender and heredity. All of the groups provide their own perspectives to the government and make it easy for the government to perform efficiently without modifying goals.
The focus on federal diversity in the U.S. government workforce first started with identifying the various groups to improve the mix of people employed with and representing it. To match the government?s diversity actions and policies, the group?s roles were associated with different skill sets. Data collection exercises done by the government showed that some factions were inadequately represented according to the needs outlined by the diversity program. Actions were taken to provide information and access to equalize employment opportunities within the federal government. The actions included training and retraining related to government employment. Statistics showing that women are also badly represented in the workforce have recently been revealed by diversity program studies of the federal government.
The goals for the diversity program establish a standard for participation of women, hence developing a measurable system for achieving the program?s objectives. Diversity promotions help to increase recognition of how this diverse group would play a substantial role in the long term goals for federal government. The program toed the initially formulated line, with benefits being perceived through gender neutrality across each level in the federal government. Hoping to eradicate earlier hurdles with similar attempts, the program continues to disseminate incentives encouraging diversity change. As some nationalities are found to be badly represented in the federal diversity workforce, it is clear that other groups are facing similar difficulties. What is important is that the aspects responsible for the poor representation of diversity groups do not stay the same but one common trend does emerge. Diversity exists in lower level skill sets accounting for a big portion of federal government employment. Diversity appears to fade in the higher level skill sets and continues to decrease among all groups.
Supporters of diversity explain that to achieve the goals set out by the federal government, it is essential to boost performance. As the first link of maintaining continuity in the employee pool correlated with diversity promotions in federal government schemes, succession planning must be undertaken. The profiling of the workforce must thus be carried out to reflect the success achieved and recognize the strengths and vulnerabilities with regard to the diversity goals.
