Style has now become a necessity rather than mere luxury. It was considered only as a luxury few years back. Nowadays, Indian population have become brand conscious and we can see people flaunting branded clothes and shoes. Mostly everyone is able to afford buying branded clothes and accessories; whereas it was only a handful of people who used to wear branded clothes.
The consumers prefer branded clothes than the clothes which aren’t branded. This has become a fashion statement and consumers feel that they fit in with the society only when they wear the branded clothes.

Men and women equally have become brand conscious. Usually men buy designer shirts, pants and shoes while women buy designer accessories, dresses, pants, etc. There are many leading brands such as Adidas, Nike, Gucci, DKNY, Christian Dior and the list goes on. Some of the consumers who belong to the upper class prefer only brands such as these as they believe that they maintain their status only when they adhere to such norms.

The costs of these designer products are pretty expensive but the quality of the product is very high. Consumers shouldn’t buy branded items blindly; they should also make sure that the product they buy is worth the money. There are so many websites such as consumerdaddy website which displays all the consumer reviews, consumer reports and ratings given to a particular product for consumer protection. This information is authentic which helps the consumers to decide whether they want to buy the particular product or not.

Nowadays, many youngsters have become brand conscious and they feel it is a necessity to flaunt their designer clothes to their friends. This kind of behavior would have shocked many parents a decade ago but now parents as consumers understand the need of purchasing branded items. It has now become usual for parents to buy only branded items for their children because of the quality of the item which lasts pretty long.

Few decades back, there were not many outlets available for the consumers to buy designer products. So the consumers would either request their relatives who come from other countries to get the designer items or place an order in the designer shops which are outside the country. They would have to wait for a long time for the products to arrive but now most of the leading designer shops are available in India itself. This makes it very easy for people in India to buy the products that they want without having to wait. There are many designer outlets opened in many metropolitan cities in India.

As the economic status of our country is improving, people from this generation are the lucky ones as they don’t witness much poverty as before. They are seeing India as a modern and liberated country. Media is also a vital medium used in promoting the branded items to the consumers. This gives an easy access for the consumers to obtain more knowledge about the leading brands. Newspapers and magazines such as Cosmopolitan for women and Men’s Journal for men are also other types of mediums to promote these global brands.

Consumers belonging to the upper and middle class are mostly brand conscious. They value the brand name more than the price of the product. Some of the leading brands understand the need to present all types of price ranges for the consumers. Hence they give offers and discounts for a certain period of time such as festivals.  In men’s brands they produce unique innovative styles but for women there are only casual, work wear but very less evening wear. The choices are limited to corporate clothing and western wear.

Another reason for purchasing designer items is the increase in income levels which makes it easier for the consumers to afford these types of items. The increase in retail markets is due to the demand of the consumers as well. There is a need for the consumers to buy branded clothes which in turn increases the rise of such markets.  It’s the younger generation’s need to stay in style while parents give them the money and the privilege to buy these items. Now many people of different age groups in different cities are adopting this style to stay in fashion.

Hence, when there is a demand in buying branded items there is also demand of supply of such items. This meets the needs of the consumers. But consumers should always be aware and make sure what they buy is worth the money they spend and in case of fraud they can file complaint in consumer court.
