Take health and safety seriously, in particular, where electrics are involved and a RCD is the type of product you’ll be glad to have around the home. The purpose of a RCD is simple - it stops people from getting an electrical shock. There’re no frills to a RCD, it doesn’t like to blow its own trumpet it simply wants to keep you safe. Switch on a household appliance and if it’s faulty the RCD will trip in a matter of seconds. There are a variety of RCD units in operation around the world and like RCBO products these little devices help to save lives and reduce the risk of electrical shock.
Of course, for someone who knows nothing about electrics they might not even know what the RCD looks like in their home.
Do you know what your RCD looks like?
You most probably do, surely you must have reset an RCD at some point in your life. You can easily tell an RCD. Look in your electrical consumer unit at home and you’ll see some kind of RCD. Double pole varieties of RCD are like little white blocks that have an on/off switch on the front of them. If there’s a surge in power the RCD will trip and the switch will automatically go into the off position. To reset the RCD just flip the switch back into the on position and it’ll be ready to guard your electrics once more.
If you’re not sure what an RCBO looks like take a closer look at you consumer unit and find out first hand.
What’s wrong with my old fuse box?
Nothing, if you’re not bothered about safety standards within the home that incorporate the latest RCD technology. Then again, if you want to stay safe and know you have the best level of protection, isn’t it time you upgraded to a new RCD?
As with anything electrical, it’s best to leave the fitting of an RCD to an approved contractor who fits RCBO devices and other circuit protection products. This way you know that the RCD has been fitted properly and your home’s electrics are covered with the best level of protection.
It’s good to use an RCD for electrical safety; it’ll trip at the first sign of trouble. Would you want to run the risk of not having an approved circuit breaker in your house that reacted to any sudden surges?
