What immediately springs to mind when you read the words ‘business appearance’? You may initially have thought of how you look physically – whether you wear a suit or anything else to work. But appearances are not just about how you look. They are also wrapped up in every single part of your business, and this is why they are so important.

Let’s suppose you walked into a local business of some kind to see whether they offered the service or product you were looking for. How would you react if the premises were untidy and hectic, with stressed staff and no one there to instantly welcome you inside? Would you react better or worse to a situation where everything was kept clean and tidy and the staff were always friendly and welcoming?

It is easy to assume that a business appearance relates only to one particular thing, such as the impression given by a business card or the way a member of staff is dressed. But in fact a professional appearance can be given (or not, as the case may be) in many different ways.

If you own your own business think about the different ways in which you interact with your clients. This could be in a physical, face to face way; it could be in a verbal way, or it could be in the form of some written communication – an email or a letter perhaps. Every single one represents a chance to put across a professional appearance for your business, and if you don’t make it happen you could end up losing customers.

The best way to ensure you always focus on the most professional outlook you can is to focus on each individual task in turn. For example let’s say you want to create a new business card. You may be tempted to try and save money by creating one yourself. But you cannot obtain a professional one by creating your own using your home printer. This means you will need to have one professionally designed and printed by an experienced printer.

The way you dress will also be important, but it doesn’t necessarily mean wearing business attire. If you run your own graphic design company this type of attire would look out of place. Smart but casual would be better in this case.

As you can tell, your business appearance goes into lots of different areas. It even extends to your website, where a cut price design and poor spelling will certainly send people elsewhere. Be sure to adopt a professional greeting when answering your business phones as well. The more you do to successfully enhance the appearance of your business, the more successful your business will be as a result.
