Gantry cranes are a type of overhead crane that lifts objects with the use of a hoist. They work in a similar way to overhead cranes but they are supported by uprights instead of being fixed up high onto a wall or ceiling. The uprights commonly have wheels on so the whole crane can be moved along the full length of a building and these often sit in tracks to keep them in the correct position when moving them. Some gantry cranes have rubber wheels so they don’t need a track to run in. Gantry cranes are well suited to lifting extremely heavy objects and huge gantry cranes have been used to help build ships and to move very large parts into place. Without a gantry crane such tasks may be impossible or extremely difficult and time consuming.
Smaller gantry cranes are commonly used in factories to lift and transport smaller items around a working area such as in the automotive industry to lift engines in and out of vehicles as the crane can be moved along the product line very easily. Gantry Cranes are commonly found in factory settings such as steel yards where lots of heavy materials are used and need lifting frequently. There are many different types of gantry cranes available and they vary greatly in cost depending on the size and weight requirements. The cranes tend to range in lifting capacity from 2 to 200 tons so they have a great range of capabilities. The greater the weight you need to lift the more expensive the crane is likely to be as it will be larger in size. Gantry cranes are typically powered by electricity.
Companies that sell and manufacture gantry cranes will work with you to understand your exact needs and requirements to design and build a fantastic bespoke gantry crane for you. They will visit your working environment to measure to for the crane and understand how the crane will be used so they can design it effectively to fulfill all your criteria. New gantry cranes should come with a warranty to cover any parts failure that may occur.
