Jersey barrier is the most common structures found in roads that have deal with heavy traffic. These safety measures help in the proper management of the traffic. Thus, the number of accidents is greatly reduced. This helps in the saving of damage of both property and human lives. If an accident still occurs, then such structures will again help to quickly resume the normal flow of traffic. The first time that the jersey barrier came into existence is in the year 1964. It was placed in the road called the US Route 99, which stretched over the perilous road of California’s Ridge Route Highway. A lot of trucks passed over this road and thus collisions were quite common. The California division of Highway found immediate results as the number of head-on or other collisions reduced drastically. The New Jersey Highway came to know about the barriers from a newspaper report in the year 1949. They started using the Jersey barriers which were 19-inch-high, 30-inch-wide. They had curved in parabolic faces on the either sides. This was the actual beginning of the using of the Jersey barriers which further saw a lot of developments in this field. The height of the barriers kept on increasing from the initial 19 inches to the recent 32 inches. Several experiments were later carried on to find all the benefits from the jersey barrier. The results from the experiments made people universally accept it as the best means to control traffic. Also, the cost of maintenance for the barriers is incredibly low. In the year 1992, The American Automobile Association, The National Science Foundation, and Institute of Transportation Studies of the University of California at Irvine carried out a joint evaluation of the Jersey barriers and found that there has been a huge decrease in the number accidents.
