Overvoltage is the pressure jumping which far exceeds the rated voltage in some parts of the electric power system in its operation because of various reasons such as lightning stroke, malfunction, breakdown or unsuitable match of parameters of the electrical equipments. The reasons of overvoltage can be divided into two types. One is external overvoltage which is caused by direct lightning stroke or lightning induction. The other is internal overvoltage which is caused by the energy conversion or parameter variation in the electric power system. Internal overvoltage is the main criterion to identify the normal insulation level of various electrical equipments in the electric power system. That is to say, the design of the insulating structure of products should not only consider the rated voltage but also consider the internal overvoltage of the working environment of the products. Hipot test is to examine that whether the insulating structure of rovan baja can bear the internal overvoltage of the electric power system.

Difference between Direct Current Hipot Test & Alternating Current Hipot Test

There are two kinds of hipot test, direct current hipot test and alternating current hipot test. The characteristic of insulating materials determines that the breakdown mechanism of direct current and alternating current pressure differs a lot. Most insulating materials and systems include series of different mediums. When the hipot tester is giving alternating current hipot test to it, the pressure will be distributed according to the proportion of parameters like dielectric constant and size. However, pressure of direct current only can be distributed according to the proportion of the electric resistance of the materials. If we are going to use direct current for hipot test, it is demanded that the testing voltage be higher than that of the alternating current.

Form Test & Factory Test

Form test is to identify that whether the insulating structure of the mini rc car products is suitable for practical use. Generally, form test is done immediately after temperature rise test, humidity test, abnormal test and other tests. The products are usually given test voltage for one minute.

Factory test is to test the manufacturing defects in the production process, instead of the design of insulating structure. Factory test is usually done before the packing. Cases of manufacturing defects of insulating structure can be: the insulating layer is damaged by sharp component, the welding joint of wires is not perfectly done or falls off, creepage distance is reduced, the insulation in the transformer is damaged, etc.

Hipot Test & Breakdown Test

Passing the hipot test only can prove that the insulating structure of the products can bear the testing voltage, not how high voltage it can bear. If you are doing application research of the insulating materials and designing of electric equipments and need to examine the insulation strength, breakdown test is needed. Breakdown test is to examine the voltage when the dielectric is broken down. For a electric products, when its insulation is broken down, it cannot function any more. This result is totally different from hipot test. Hipot test is to ensure that the products are free from defects and operate normally and safely by hipot tester. Therefore, the testing voltage of hipot test has been proved to be safe, reliable and effective by experiments and it should be carried out strictly.
