The Volkswagen Polo has attracted many platitudes over the years, but rarely in the terms used recently by retired Australian racing driver John Bowe.

“It’s a bizarre experience to get into something the size of a post box and find that it really goes,” said Bowe, whose test drive of the Polo helped it earn a ‘Best City Car’ award in his native country.

“I really like the way these new-generation engines are convincing people that it’s OK to have a small engine.”

Some perspective might be required here – the Polo engines range from 1.2 to 1.4 litres in their petrol guise, and from 1.2 to 1.6 for the diesels, so they’re not ridiculously tiny. It’s more that Bowe made his reputation racing something with a five-litre V8.

As for the Polo’s racing reputation? It’s a bit less distinguished than Bowe’s, but that could well change next year when it takes itself off the city streets and onto the ice, forests, and winding gravel roads of the World Rally Championship. That particular version of the car, designated the Polo R WRC, is a four-wheel-drive with 300bhp under the driver’s right foot, but as a thoroughbred competition machine, you won’t find one in your local dealership.

You will find the full range of more conventional Polos though, and a recognised specialist such as Volkswagen Polo Bridgewater will be only too happy to help you arrange a test drive so that you can experience the ‘flying post box’ for yourself.
