It will be a Golf – but not as you know it. At least, not if you still think of associate the Golf with the car that the old lady down the street with the yappy dogs used to drive.
The German manufacturer recently announced that the sporty R series of Golfs will be based on high-performance diesel engines and fitted with all-wheel-drive technology. The upcoming Golf R 7 could herald the switch if, as expected, it comes with a diesel engine.
Presently, the Golf R is equipped with a 2.0 litre turbo-charged four-cylinder engine, itself a departure from the 3.2 litre VR6 that powered the previous Golf R32.
One thing you won’t see in the new generation of Golfs is a hybrid. VW R division executive director Ulrich Riestenpattgt. Richter told Autoblog that the benefits of using a hybrid powertrain can be achieved equally effectively by reducing the car’s weight to the tune of 100 kilos (220 pounds).
The best materials for doing this, such as carbon fibre, are still very expensive though, which means that the company will look towards aluminum instead.
There will be hybrids elsewhere in the VW range though, with a hybrid Jetta expected to be launched in the US shortly.
Those who like their VWs to have a bit of a kick will already be fans of the R range; with a new engine in the works and less weight to drag around, they’ll soon be able to have their fun without taking such a hit at the fuel pump.
