The Volvo C70 was introduced in 1997, it was a coupe or cabriolet model based on the Volvo S40 platform. The C70 is the only coupe in the Volvo range; in fact it is also the only cabriolet in the Volvo range. The first generation cabriolet came with a cloth roof; the second generation has an electric folding hard top roof.

The second generation C70 is what many describe as a Coupe-Convertible; much like the Renault Megane it has a hard top roof making it a coupe but, the roof folds away when needed making it a cabriolet. The second generation has been around since 2006 and was designed by Pininfarina, a face lift was applied in 2011.

The face lift included changes to the front end design, new rear light clusters, and a redesigned instrument panel. The engine transmission options remained the same; there are three engines to choose from in total. There is one petrol – a 2.5 litre with 230 bhp, it’s fast but can be thirsty too. The better options are one of two diesel engines; there is a 148 bhp D3 model and a 174 bhp D4 version. Both of the diesel engines are potent and deliver power throughout the rev range, they are also very fuel efficient.

At the 2011 LA Show Volvo unveiled the C70 Inscription edition; it comes with 18-inch alloys, ‘Sovereign Hide’ upholstery and a leather-covered dashboard. Other touches include ‘Inscription’ embroidered on the front headrests, Inscription carpets and handbrake lever and aluminium inlays in the steering wheel, gear lever and centre stack. It will be available with a choice of the two diesel engines and I will be available for car hire in Belfast.
