In 2006 Mercedes-Benz produced their first ever multipurpose vehicle; the idea was first presented at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show. The production model did not debut until the 2005 New York International Auto Show. The R Class is based on the Mercedes W251 platform and sist between the M Class and GL Class. A new model was launched last year to highlight the R Class’ unique personality and versatility.
The Mercedes R Class comes with an option of two diesel engines, both are 3.0 litre V6 power plants but one has 187 bhp while the other has 220 bhp. Both engine options come with a 7 speed automatic gearbox and have plenty of power. The larger 220 bhp model is potent and surges through the 7 speed gearbox, it can really get the adrenalin running! The smaller engine is economical and quick enough – making it my personal favourite.
The nature of the R Class is to be a luxury cruiser emphasising on comfort and refinement. Mercedes have done well to ensure the R Class absorbs all the imperfection on the road and provide an exceptionally smooth ride.
The 2011 update bought some changes to the R Class to bring it in line with the new Mercedes Benz design mantra. It now has a completely redesigned front section, which has taken elements both from Mercedes Benz saloons and SUV models.
Sales of the first generation R Class did not meet expectations; the latest model has been on sale since September this year. We’ll have to wait and see if the new model does any better!
