The Ford brand is the most sold car in the UK ahead of Vauxhall which basically means that most of us either drive a Ford ourselves or we know someone who does. It also means that news from Ford are generally met with enthusiasm from the buying public as many people who own a Ford will be looking to replace it with a new one.
Currently it seems to be new technology which is what the American car giant focuses on. Improved aerodynamic design to reduce resistance and thus improving performance and maximize fuel efficiency is one aspect; another is driver aids such as a lane departure warning system telling you when you’re drifting out into another lane giving you a chance to adjust your direction.
Ford has previously announced that they want to focus on making all their vehicles more fuel efficient and the models they currently sell with improved fuel efficiency are called EcoBoost. Instead of using the hybrid engine technology which has been so successful for the likes of Toyota and their Prius model, Ford focuses their innovations and improvements on lower consuming diesel engines by improving aerodynamics, resistance and efficiency.
Their Ford Fiesta model is allegedly the mass-produced car in Europe with the lowest CO2 emission and the Ford Focus Econetic they are launching in 2012 will have better fuel consumption than the above mentioned Toyota Prius. If you visit somewhere like Ford Luton, you could check out their new technology yourself.
But although Ford say they’re focusing on improved fuel efficiency in conventional cars they do have an all electric Ford Focus about to hit the market as well as two hybrid versions of the Ford C-Max.
Looking more closely at the technology packs offered on models such as the Ford Focus, Ford offers what they’ve called a ‘Driver Assistance Pack’ as an optional extra. This includes features such as traffic sign recognition where a front-mounted camera detects speed and overtaking signs and then displays them on the dashboard and a low speed safety system which is designed to step in to prevent low speed collisions. The Low Speed Safety System uses a forward facing infra-red laser beam which scans the distance to an approaching object and then if the sensor sense you’re getting to close, the brakes are activated to make the car stop. In addition to this Ford also offers something they call the ‘Convenience Pack’ which includes features to help you park, a feature I’m sure many drivers would find useful.
So with this continuous focus on technological improvements and advances, Ford will probably still remain one of the top selling makes in the UK.
