Paper-cut is also known as paper carving, or paper-cut for window decoration. The difference lies in the tool that used in the creation of it. Some are made by scissors, some with burin. Although there is difference in tools, the works are basically the same. People give all these kind of handicraft a name paper-cut. Paper-cut is a kind of stencil art; it provides people a hollow feeling and artistic enjoyment on the visual space.

Chinese folk paper-cut art has its own process of formation and development. The invention of paper was in the West Han Dynasty BC. Prior to the emergence of the invention of paper, paper-cut can't be appeared, however in that time, people used the sheeting material to make handicraft through the hollow carving handicraft techniques had already been popular before the appearance of paper.

When it comes to the history of paper-cut, it should begin with the appearance of paper. The invention of paper in Han Dynasty has promoted the appearance, development and popularity of paper-cut.

It was in Tang Dynasty that Paper-cut was in its great development. From the paper-cut in the British Museum, we can find the then paper-cut was with a high artistic level, a complete composition of picture to express the ideal state of heaven and earth.

The papermaking is mature in Song Dynasty, and there was variety of paper which provided advantages for paper-cut. Such as, the paper-cut as a private gift, paper-cut affixed to window, or the use of paper-cut as a decoration to tea cup and other objects.

Paper-cut has reached its peak in Ming and Qing Dynasty. The use of handmade folk paper-cut become broadly. Almost all the decorations people used to decorate the light, fan and embroidery are paper-cut. It is more often foe people to use the paper-cut as decorative accessories in house, and thus to make their living environment beautiful. Needlecraft is a standard to weight whether women is perfect or not in the Chinese tradition in that time. So as the compulsory skill, paper-cut becomes a craft that girls have to learn when they are young. They learned from their sisters or elder generations, they described their familiar and loved natural features, such as fish and insects, flower and tree, landscape and finally reached the realm to cut arbitrary shape.

Chinese folk art of paper-cut likes ivy, old but evergreen, the popularity, practicability and aesthetic make it meet the psychological needs of the people.
