It’s fair to say that the American singer, songwriter, dancer and performer Janelle Monae has caused quite a stir in recent years – certainly amongst fans’ and critics’ circles, but also increasingly amongst the wider music-buying public.
Monae works in such genres as afro-punk, R&B, indie pop, soul and funk, and critics have observed a vast range of influences, including Prince, Michael Jackson, OutKast, Grace Jones, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie and Funkadelic.
She is also known for her distinctive Tuxedo – which she has described as a “uniform” which keeps her “balanced” - and immaculately coiffed hair.
From Kansas to Metropolis
Born in Kansas City in Kansas, Monae later moved to New York to study theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, having originally intended to pursue a career on Broadway. She later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she met Big Boi from OutKast, who introduced her to Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs. She was soon signed onto their ‘Bad Boy’ record label in 2006.
Monae released her first digital single, “Lettin’ Go”, in June 2006, followed by her 2007 debut EP, Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), which introduced her android alter-ego, Cindy Mayweather. By 2010, she had released the critically acclaimed album, The ArchAndroid. This album received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album and featured the James Brown inspired single, “Tightrope”, which was also nominated for “Best Urban/Alternative Performance”.
With a string of other acclaimed songs, including “Sincerely Jane”, “Many Moons” and “Cold War”, Monae looks set to be around for a long time to come.
