If you ever happen to Google for the meaning of the word caricature, this is what you will come across ‘An illustration, especially pictorial or literary, in which the subject's characteristic features or peculiarities are deliberately exaggerated to produce a comic or grotesque effect’. The art of how to draw caricatures is not intended for offensive reasons; it merely adds humor to the situation.

A review-history of caricature drawings

Caricatures are primarily known to have originated in the European lands as a device to mock about several social issues. The most famous works coming from the drawing books of Leonard da Vinci. The word Caricature came into existence from the Italian word caricare, which meant ‘to load’. A different set of historians have a different story behind the origin of the word caricatures. According to them an Italian artist by the name Annibale Caracci introduced this form of drawing.

In the 17th century there was a prevalent trend of depicting the things as beautifully as possible. The chapels, paintings, buildings and other great works of art belonging to that era support my saying. Annibale Caracci moved against the stream of trends and started making portraits that had humor content in them. These portraits were loaded with meaning. It was a territory of the people belonging to well to do families. They enjoyed this piece of art and got such portraits made after paying to the artisans.

This art of caricature that was born in Italy as per the facts slowly started moving towards England. By the time 18th century came to an end this art was popular among the rich folks of England as well. But here also it was a welcomed source of amusement which only the upper middle class people could afford.

By the time world entered the 19th century, there was a commendable advancement in the field of printing and public awareness. It is at this time that caricature drawing moved out in public from the courtyards of the rich. It reached masses through newspaper. It was enjoyed by everyone due to a perfect balance of hilarity and message.

The caricature drawing aimed at a moderate mockery with some hidden meaning, conveying an effective message. Usually the politicians became the targeted subjects for these caricatures. It became an influential way of mocking about the politicians and their works. Today caricature drawing is restricted to politicians and celebrities. It has again been limited to newspapers and magazines.
